Gulsoom is a visual artist based in Quetta, Pakistan. She graduated with a bachelors in Fine Arts from the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture in 2019, where she specialised in contemporary miniature painting and printmaking. She further studied traditional Persian miniature painting at Faiz Ghar in Lahore, Pakistan. Since then, Gulsoom has participated in various exhibitions nationally and internationally, including a group show at PNCA Islamabad curated by the Switzerland Embassy of Pakistan, where her work was featured twice.
Gulsoom describes herself as an introvert and finds that her passion for miniature painting is rooted in her patient temperament. Her commissioned work is usually traditional Persian miniature portraits of famous Mughal personalities. However, her personal work employs the techniques of contemporary miniature painting, where she paints imagery from her fragmented memories in Quetta. Quetta is a mountainous region and so her work embodies a grey, copper and crimson colour palette to match the landscape of the city, while also capturing its prominent architecture in her work.Â
She currently resides in Karachi, frequently works with local artisans and conducts multiple workshops in small towns around the country.
