Muhammad Hussain was born in a remote village, Kharmang Kamango Gonse, Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan. He did his bachelors in Fine Arts with a major in painting and graduated with a distinction from the National College of Arts, Lahore, Pakistan.
The process is the star element in Hussain’s work, which helps him explore themes of distortion, identity and scattered memories. He began working with the idea of a crumpled ball of newspaper that distorts the image and text once unfolded. He took this idea forward by using traditional techniques to paint on a folded, unprimed canvas and unfolding the canvas after painting his subject to reveal a shattered, distorted image. Hussain has also experimented with taking broken mirrors to different locations in Pakistan and placing them in front of prominent monuments to paint them from different perspectives and challenge the way we typically see things. He describes his work as the balance between old and contemporary styles of painting.
Hussain has exhibited in several group shows around Pakistan, with his latest shows being: “Angels of Convention and Anarchy” in Rangrez Gallery, Lahore and “Resurgence” in Ejaz Art Gallery, Lahore.
