Chai Tote Bag

16" x 14"
US$ 80

This canvas tote bag is inspired by the most popular drink from the subcontinent, chai (tea). The front of the bag is adorned with an illustration of a cup of chai, served in a green chenak (metal pot to serve tea), by Karachi based illustrator, Radia Durrani.

Whether it is served in personal living rooms or fresh at a chai dhaaba (roadside cafe), there remains a close cultural bond associated with chai that brings people together. Originating from Quetta, Pakistan, the bag features doodh patti, a form of chai that is widely consumed across the country. A sweet mix of tea, cardamom, milk, sugar and salt which is left to brew until it becomes a bubbling pot of creamy pleasure – served in a chenak with a side of biscuits as the finishing touch.

The inside of the tote is lined with a floral fabric known as cheent, which originated from the Indian subcontinent and was inspired by floral prints prominent in the attire and decor of the Mughal rulers.
